San Ignacio has rivers on both sides of it - the Mopan and the Macal. A trip down either will take you to seldom seen places, great views and if you're lucky monkeys.
The kayaking tour is an all day trip that takes you down the Mopan River. At 9:00, you'll head to the Guatemala border and put in. There are a fair number of rapids that range from 1-3. The trip will take you through uninhabited sections of the river, where one can usually see herons, king fishers, bats, iguanas, the occasional monkey and villagers doing laundry. If you want to bring a camera, our guides have dry bags. You'll get out 6-7 miles down creek at Calla Creek (about 3.5hrs) and you'll be back in town around 4pm.
The canoeing trip will take you up river on the Macal. This paddle goes from 9am to 3 or 4pm depending. You'll be starting out at the Hawksworth Bridge in the middle of San Ignacio. From there, you'll paddle up stream to either the botanic gardens (DuPlooy's) or to the butterfly garden, medicinal trail and Mayan Museum at Chaa Creek. On the way you'll see some fairly remote parts of Cayo that most people don't ever see. Wildlife will include toucans, parrots, iguanas, bats and larger animals on occasion. You'll also get to see some beautiful jungle and plant life.
