Floating on the Mopan

Rivers really are the best way to see Belize. They wrap and wind their way through secluded tracts of jungle and bush. There are places you might come around a bend in the river and see a monkey hanging around or some of the giant iguanas lurking in the fig trees. It's just you and the tube (and your guide and friends that go with you). There are of course other way to see the more wild side of Belize, but honestly how often to you really get to say you floated through a jungle on a tube.

On the River

This tour/trip starts at 9am when you'll head out to Soccutz. Sitting above the Mopan River in Succotz is the Maya ruin of Xunantunich, which you'll tour before you start the trip down river. Xunantunich is one of the larger structures in Belize, but the site really isn't very big so it works well for a short tour, pre float. After seeing Xunantunich (and probably getting quite hot), you'll head down to the river and mount your rubbery steed (the tube). You'll float 3 hours down the Mopan to Clarissa Falls. You'll encounter rapids in a variety of sizes, giant trees, thickets of bamboo and animals ranging from iguanas to bats to egrets and more. At Clarissa falls there is a lovely little place where you can get out and grab a drink. This usually takes until around 2ish (it really depends on the level of the river). When you get to the stopping point, your transportation will be waiting for you with all of your nice dry clothes.
